Heel Spur

A heel spur is a bony protrusion that forms on the underside of the heel bone, typically as a result of calcium deposits building up over time. This condition often develops gradually and is best diagnosed through an X-ray examination. Heel spurs are commonly linked with plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. Common symptoms of a heel spur include pain in the affected area, tenderness, and mild swelling at the front of the heel.

Several factors can increase your risk of developing a heel spur. Running or jogging on hard surfaces, being overweight or obese, wearing poorly fitting shoes, and having walking gait abnormalities are all known contributors. In many cases, a heel spur develops when repetitive stress is placed on the heel over an extended period, sometimes combined with arthritis or improper footwear.

Treating a heel spur often begins with simple lifestyle changes. Getting plenty of rest and using cold compresses can help alleviate discomfort. To prevent further irritation, it may be useful to look into wearing shoe inserts or custom orthotics. For many patients, these conservative measures provide significant relief without the need for more invasive treatments.

Prevention is also an important part of care. Wearing well-fitting shoes with shock-absorbent soles can make a meaningful difference. It is also wise to choose the right shoe for your activity—for example, avoid wearing casual walking shoes when going for a run. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight helps prevent excess pressure from being placed on the ligaments of the feet.

There are also several exercises that can reduce heel spur pain and decrease inflammation. Helpful options include calf stretches performed against a wall or on a step, foot rolls using a golf or tennis ball, seated foot flexes, and towel grabs with your toes. Heel spur prevention starts by understanding the everyday stresses put on your feet and knowing when to let your feet rest. It is equally important not to let heel pain go uncared for. Once you notice something is off, taking action right away is far better than waiting to see if the problem disappears on its own.
