Bunion pain is a very common issue that affects many of our patients. It is a progressive problem in which the bones of the foot gradually drift from their original positions over time. This may lead to a large bump on the inside of the foot causing the big toe to bend inward toward the smaller toes. This can limit the choices of shoes you may be able to wear or make walking difficult due to the pain the bunion may cause.
Many people are aware of bunion surgery but may avoid the topic altogether out of fear of the post operative rehabilitation.
Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Bunionectomy is a newer advanced technique available for the treatment of bunion pain. This involves cutting and moving the bones through very small incisions to straighten the big toe and reduce the bump. The benefits of this advanced surgical technique include:
-
Immediate weightbearing –This procedure does not require the use of crutches during the recovery. Patients are able to walk in a protective boot the same day as the procedure. Typically, the recovery period includes walking in this boot for about 4-6 weeks.
-
No large incision scars – The procedure is done through a few very small incisions on the side of the foot. Correction of the bunion does not require large scars to the top of the foot with this procedure.
-
Less Stiffness – Since there is no large scar over the joint, the big toe is generally able to move much more freely after the recovery compared to other bunion procedures.
While there are many procedures available for bunion correction, this MIS Bunionectomy is an advanced technique with many benefits that may get patients back to moving without bunion pain.
Dr. McGowan’s extensive fellowship training included thorough exposure to the MIS bunionectomy. Schedule an appointment for further evaluation to discuss if this procedure may be right for you or a loved one.
